Our Cooperative has opened a Baby Pit Stop of La Leche League at its office in Via W. Fontan in Bussoleno, in the province of Turin, as part of its work-life balance initiatives and in order to offer opportunities to the local area.

Let’s borrow the words of La Leche League to explain what it is

The Baby Pit Stop as explained on La Leche League website

To improve the health of our children, one of the most effective things we can do is to breastfeed them. Breastfeeding also benefits mothers, families, the community, the health and social system, the environment and society in general. The protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding is one of the priorities of public health in Europe, as well as in the Third World, according to the Directorate for Public Health and Risk Assessment of the European Commission.

Breastfeeding is a simple and natural activity. Women could do it anywhere, but sometimes in a city it can get complicated. It can be difficult to find a place to sit down or to find shelter from the rain; and if the mother asks if she can breastfeed in a shop, sometimes she is asked to buy something in return, or she may feel she owes the shop something in return.

The importance of creating welcoming environments to encourage breastfeeding is underlined by the sixth point of the Unicef document “Seven Point Plan for sustaining Breastfeeding in the Baby Friendly Community”. Any kind of commercial facility due to its territorial distribution can be part of an important support network for the mothers who are breastfeeding and who are not home with their babies, by offering hospitality, spaces for breastfeeding, resting and (if possible) also for changing the baby.

The Baby Pit Stop of La Leche League

Breastfeeding is the normal and natural way to provide the baby with all the nutrients (and many protective factors) he or she needs to grow up in a healthy way.

Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended until about the sixth month of the baby’s life, and continues with the inclusion of appropriate complementary food up to two years or more, according to the wishes of mother and child.

Promoting breastfeeding is one of the most effective interventions for improving the health of our children. Breastfeeding also benefits mothers, families, the community, the health and social system, the environment and society in general. The protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding is a public health priority in Europe.

The mothers who breastfeed often need practical support, such as finding comfortable places to breastfeed and change the baby or rest while going out with their baby. The city’s commercial facilities, due to their territorial distribution, can be an important support network for the mothers who are breastfeeding and who are not home with their babies, by offering hospitality, spaces for breastfeeding, resting and changing the baby.

This is why the initiative called Baby Pit Stop – LLL: Negozio Amico dell’Allattamento (Breastfeeding Friendly Shop) was born in 2004 in Fano, in the province of Pesaro and Urbino.
